TESTIMONIALS

John Alleyne

Artist, Independent Curator, and Professor

Since I first met Isaiah Michael Joyner in 2023, he has been one of the most consistent and meaningful supporters of my work and studio practice. As my first collector in New Orleans, Isaiah has welcomed two of my silkscreen monotypes into his personal collection. He has invested in my growth as an artist by opening doors and creating opportunities that I could not have accessed on my own.

He understands the importance of supporting Black artists in New Orleans, and the power of artists supporting one another. He truly believes that artists should be respected and compensated for their time, knowledge, and labor. Through Unconventional Curators, he has built community by bringing artists, collectors, and scholars into meaningful conversation, from inviting me to major art events during Miami Art Week and the 2025 Armory Show, to recommending me for a 2026 artist panel with Stanford University lecturer and artist Jessica Monette’s course, New Orleans as a Method: Time, Tradition, and the Art of Black Cultural Production.

Isaiah’s belief in my work has expanded my network, strengthened my confidence, and reminded me that collecting art can be an act of friendship, advocacy, and community care.

Jessica Monette

MFA 2024 Artist and Educator

I met Isaiah just last year at Gloryland in Houston, and by that evening he had invited me to dinner and introduced me to people in the art community who I’m still connected to today. In our first year of knowing each other, we’ve collaborated through my university teaching, where he shared his collection, passion for collecting, and growing curatorial practice with my students, and more recently he connected me with a collector who acquired one of my works. Isaiah is real, honest, generous, and genuinely invested in seeing people thrive. When you find people like that in this industry, and in life, you hold on to them.
